Pushing graphene from the research lab to the marketplace

With a budget of €1 billion, Graphene is a EU-funded FET Flagship project (FP7/H2020) launched for a 10-year period in 2013. The current consortium consists of over 150 academic and industrial research groups from 23 countries. The project has a growing number of associated members that will be incorporated in the scientific and technological work packages during the current project phase (1 April 2016 – 31 March 2018). The project started in a ramp-up phase (October 2013 till the end of March 2016), then planned to enter into the steady-state phase (2016-2020). The Graphene Flagship is coordinated by Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Graphene – a multi-talented material

It is two dimensional flexible, transparent, strong and thin at the same time. It conducts electricity and thermal energy and it can be combined with many other elements, opening for a lot of opportunities in material science. Due to its remarkable properties graphene is the most exciting and promising materials at present with great potential for ICT, aviation, automotive, batteries, etc.

At the same time being the 4th abundant element, Graphene could help to replace many rare earth elements and help for a more sustainable use of natural resources.

To bring graphene from research to practical applications is the main goal of the FET flagship Graphene launched in 2013. During the next ten years 150 academic and industrial research groups in 23 Countries join forces to exploit Graphene’s characteristics and potentials for the future, to explore techniques to produce industrial scale amounts of graphene and to develop every day applications.

Coordinating a project of this size and complexity is full of challenges, especially when you consider hundreds of partners, deliverables and work packages while facing time and budget constraints at every corner. After kicking-off the project in October 2013, the coordination team clearly saw the need for a management software that optimises the processes and communication amongst the partners. To achieve that – and to reduce the administration and gain efficiency – GRAPHENE turned to EMDESK.

Proud to have facilitated the ramp-up phase of GRAPHENE, EMDESK is happy to continue supporting the next phase Core 1.

GRAPHENE - an extraordinary challenge:

Katarina Boustedt, (Project Coordinator @ Graphene Flagship): "After the EMDESK team quickly mapped the project in EMDESK, we appreciated getting started right away by using the standard edition of EMDESK. Professionally organised, the EMDESK team executed the migration from the standard edition to our servers including within less than 2 weeks, and provided us with a seamless and uncomplicated service, including consultation of our local server team. EMDESK is a highly reliable partner, that provides us with a tool that helps us to manage and monitor all our project activities. Combining a personal service with flexibility and solution-oriented thinking we lately prolonged our contract with EMDESK for the next project phase until 2018."
